Introduction: The Impact of Contacts

For thousands of years, the Inuit and First Nations travelled this land, developing networks of communication and trade. For some of these groups, the first contact with Europeans wrought profound changes in their way of life.

This section takes a look at the meeting of Europeans with the Inuit and First Nations. It also deals with the commercial activities of Basque fishermen in the estuary of the St. Lawrence, the disappearance of the St. Lawrence Iroquoians and the importance of the fur trade in New France.
